If I said it didn’t bother me, I’d be lying. I left last night around eleven, we even managed to have a nice night, after the initial events. I even thought about staying over but decided it’s best not to confuse Nora—especially if they’re leaving.

It’s almost noon and my second client is due any minute. The bell sounds and I look up to find a blonde woman, fake tits on show and a mini skirt so short I’m pretty sure her tits wouldn’t be the only thing she’d flash if she bent over. The guys look like all their birthdays have come at once as they grin and give each other the look. I’m far from interested, but this type always seem to choose me over the others. Sharon was just like that. Never again.

‘Hey what can I do for you?’

The woman flutters her eyelashes and sashays over to where I’m sat behind the desk. ‘Well if you can do this for me?’ She gets out her phone and shows me a picture from Pinterest, it’s a watercolour rose. Looks quite nice. Not what I expected her to choose.

‘Sure, you want anything changing or exactly how it is?’

‘Exactly how it is please.’ We discuss size and position and then I move to my sketch area. Draw it up and get the transfer on her ribs. When she’s happy I get her laid down.

‘You know the rib area is painful?’ I ask assuming she’s done her homework. Tattooing over bones seems to be the most painful for most people. She nods her head but the way she’s squeezing her eyes shut and tensing her whole body tells me it may take a while. Two hours later and some petty conversation about nights out and holidays and she’s done. I leave her to check it out in the mirror and I check my diary. No one in for the rest of the day and I’m hungry.

‘Thanks so much, I love it,’ she says coming over to the desk. ‘I can’t wait for my next one already.’

‘My pleasure.’ I smile and give her a wink. Not in any-way flirting. Just being nice. But she sidles up to the desk hands me her card to take payment and slips me her number too.

‘It’s been great, I’d really like to see you again,’ she says bold as brass. Like she just paid me for sex.

‘Well you can book in now or just give the shop a call.’ I tell her politely. She smiles and gives me an exaggerated wink like we’re sharing a big secret. I nod back politely as she leaves. When she’s gone I throw her number into the bin. I can’t deal with women like her.

‘The next time someone like that walks in to book an appointment with me, I’m fucking busy!’ I yell in the general direction of our apprentice.

Tony looks over at me from his station. ‘What’s up with you?’

‘Fuck all,’ I answer like an asshole.

‘Well can you cheer the fuck up then?’ He laughs but I’m not in the mood.
